This one province encapsulates how the West imagines Africa palm fringed beaches, teeming game reserves and endless mountains. It is also home to the Zulus, a nation that continues to captivate the popular imagination of Europe and America.

Indeed it is the Zulu people who remain one of the biggest attractions for foreign visitors. The wonder and majesty of their great king Shaka can still be felt in the hutstudded green hills of the north coast. The provinces 250 km of beaches, divided into the south and north coasts with the port of Durban in the middle, are almost all swimable throughout the year. The Mozambique Current ensures the sea temperature stays warm even during the mild winters.

Tropical vegetation along the coast gives the province a strong holiday flavor and in the school breaks during July and December the beaches swarm with upcountry visitors. Although the Zulus make up the majority of the provinces population there is also a sizable Indian community whose ancestors were brought to South Africa by the white settlers to work in the sugar cane fields. This Indian heritage has given the province a wonderful flavor that is reflected in local architecture and cuisine.
