Welcome to ERA in Gauteng
South Africa’s beating heart is Gauteng which, in Sotho, means “Place of Gold”.
It was here at the foot of a rocky ridge that prospectors found the first traces of gold that eventually led to the creation of Johannesburg, one of the biggest cities in Africa. Of South Africa’s nine provinces Gauteng is the smallest yet contributes more than 40% of the GDP and is home to eight million people. Geographically the province comprises a section of the Magaliesberg to the east and the Witwatersrand (Ridge of White Waters) to the south and west. It is the Witwatersrand that holds South Africa’s rich deposits of gold. To the eye the ridge is 80 km long, stretching east to west with Johannesburg at the centre.
The country’s capital Pretoria is 50km north of Johannesburg. How the Witwatersrand came into being is much cause for debate but there is general agreement that it was created by water 1 000 million years ago. Besides its more popular reputation as the “Place of Gold” Gauteng also forms part of the Cradle of Mankind. It was here in 1947 in the Sterkfontein Caves, 40 km west of Johannesburg, that archaeologist Dr Robert Broom found a two million year old skull of a hominid. The skull was nicknamed Mrs Ples by scientists. Nearly 50 years later the three million year old bones of a foot from a walking hominid were discovered. In 1998 a complete skeleton, believed to be the oldest ever found, was uncovered. Gauteng is where South Africa goes to work yet its recent history as well as its archaeology and geography make it a true nugget for investor and explorer alike.
