| | | Principal : | | | | On the summit of the Witwatersrand, near the end of the western ridge, lies the town of Krugersdorp, named , of course, after Paul Kruger, president of the early South African Republic. Krugersdorp is in beautiful, rugged countryside and several streams have their headwaters in the ridge of this section of the Witwatersrand. The gold reef extends as far as the Krugersdorp district and mining activity here remains busy. Apart from gold a number of other, more economic minerals, are also mined in the areas including iron, manganese and asbestos. Krugersdorp is rich in local history as it was here that the stalwarts of the old Transvaal Republic staged a massive protest against the annexation of their country by the British. |
